A starting path

If you are new to AI, here is a three-step path that works for most roles:

  1. Take the TLOS AI Essentials course for foundational knowledge.
    • A four-part self-paced course providing a foundational overview of generative AI: how models work, practical applications, prompt strategies, and responsible use. Designed for instructors; the concepts are universal.
  2. Try Microsoft Copilot Chat or Google Gemini App for hands-on practice. Both are included with your VT account at no extra cost. See Tools.
  3. Review the AI Literacy Guidelines (below) to identify which dimensions matter most for your role.

AI Literacy Guidelines

Virginia Tech has published AI Literacy Guidelines based on the Digital Education Council AI Literacy Framework. The guidelines define five dimensions of AI literacy, each with three progression levels. They help individuals and units plan their AI learning and identify areas for growth.

  1. Understanding AI and data

How AI systems work, their capabilities, and their limitations.

  2. Critical thinking and judgment

Evaluating AI output, recognizing bias, and making informed decisions.

  3. Ethical and responsible use

Privacy, fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI use.

  4. Human-centricity and creativity

Keeping human judgment and values central when working with AI.

  5. Domain expertise

Applying AI effectively within your field or discipline.
