Approved AI Tools at Virginia Tech
As of Summer 2025, there are two AI platforms officially approved at Virginia Tech:
- the free version of Microsoft Copilot, which is available to all faculty, staff, and students through their Microsoft 365 accounts; and,
- the licensed version of Microsoft 365 Copilot (the AI assistant for Microsoft 365 apps), which is available to faculty and staff to purchase.

- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, and other design tools include powerful AI features to edit and generate content.
- Purchase a license for Adobe Creative Cloud through the Software Service Center
- Custom, containerized Large-Language Models for research
- Advanced Research Computing (ARC) can set up discrete AI Large Language Models for secure offline use, eliminating costs and mitigating the risk of sharing data with cloud-based platforms

- Note-taking platform with AI features built into transcribing, quizzing on recorded content, and creating outlines
- Gradescope
- Assists faculty in grading hand-written assignments. Its AI features include matching assignments to students on the roster and sorting assignments into groups based on common answers or thought processes.
- Grackle
- This accessibility tool leverages AI to streamline the PDF remediation process.
- iClicker
- This assessment tool can generate unique questions for polls, quizzes, and assignments.
- Kaltura
- This video editing and storage platform includes AI-powered transcriptions and audio descriptions.
- Microsoft CoPilot
- This generative AI tool is available to students, staff, and faculty through their Virginia Tech Microsoft 365 accounts.
